Bringing Holiday Cheer to DCF Foster Children!

Bringing Holiday Cheer to DCF Foster Children!

A Very Merry DCF Christmas

In 2011, two sisters discovered that many children in the foster care system were not going to be able to receive gifts for Christmas. This was due to the Department of Children and Families (hereinafter DCF) lacking funding. The sisters decided that they would each select a foster a child to give a gift to. The news of the sisters’ generosity spread.

Several other families joined in, and as the years went on, more families became involved. They called themselves “Woburn Santas,” embracing a community of 73 children out of the 120 that were in foster care in the area. Staff at Woburn High school including administrators, cafeteria workers, students, and teachers participated.

One teacher stated, “If my student will never meet them, never see them, never watch them open their gifts; if the child will never know where the gifts came from and that they just appeared, how is Santa not real? They will never understand the depths of generosity and the good in people here. So much of what we hear and see is bad news, and maybe that ‘makes’ news. Using this project as my primary evidence, I choose to believe that there is more than bad in all of us.”

A vast majority of the children who are in custody of DCF (Department of Children and Families) are not always well taken care of. DCF’s mission is to help children live a healthier and happier life, free of abuse and neglect. Small acts like the one from the Woburn community bring out a bit of cheer and joy to foster children during what may be a lonely holiday.
