“Maya’s Fight for Justice: DCF’s Biggest Mistake”

A Young Girl’s Harrowing Experience

A 10-year-old girl went through a terrible ordeal at a Florida hospital. Brought in for abdominal pain, her mother briefed the doctors on the daughter’s neurological disorder called complex regional pain syndrome, CRPS. This disorder left the daughter with extremely sensitive nerves and suffered daily disabling pain in her legs that left her bound to a wheelchair. Hospital staff disregarded the mother’s instructions and neglected to provide pain or numbing agents. They proceeded to conduct ultrasounds while the daughter screamed and writhed in pain.
Instead of believing the mother, the hospital staff reported her to DCF not once but twice claiming parental neglect and over treatment. They cited her as mentally ill and alleged that she forced her daughter to portray pain. DCF took custody of the daughter accusing the mother of having Munchausen by proxy (aka, factitious disorder). For over a year, the mother was not allowed to see her daughter. Meanwhile the daughter still suffered immense pain and emotional abuse from the hospital staff who were convinced she was faking it. Sadly the story ends with the mother committing suicide as she was convinced that was the only way her daughter would receive treatment for her pain.
The daughter was eventually released months after her mother’s death. She was not only suffering physical pain but also mental anguish. The family eventually received a court award of $261 million dollars after suing DCF and the hospital. However, this case goes to show the stark consequences of DCF not adequately investigating allegations of neglect and abuse.
