A Nurse’s Honest Mistake Resulted In a DCF 51B Investigation

One day, Sarah (not her real name) was called to fill in for another school nurse. Unfortunately, Sarah ended up making a mistake when treating a child at the school. She had given an outdated insulin syringe to a student. Quickly realising her mistake, she immediately called an ambulance to take the child to the hospital. DCF investigated neglect despite her prompt action and the child’s safety.

DCF supported the allegations against Sarah, despite her prompt action and the faulty syringe being provided by the school.

We are humans with flaws and imperfections. Mistakes will happen. Sarah later appealed this decision. DCF looked through her file for any other reports. Not only were there no other reports of neglect or abuse, there were no other mistakes in her file at all. DCF also spoke with other healthcare professionals who believed the situation was only an honest and harmless mistake. The decision on her case was reversed.

Their decision to support the allegations of neglect robbed this school of a good nurse with no history of neglect or abuse. It also had severe impacts on Sarah’s life, livelihood, and reputation. The important thing should be to encourage people to take prompt action and responsibility. Supporting allegations like this creates an incentive for people to cover up their mistakes rather than address them quickly. This sets a dangerous precedent.Certainly! In cases like this, where no one ultimately suffered harm, the Department should have displayed more understanding during the initial investigation.
